Selected students from the Senior High School were recognized in the awarding ceremony of the Manila Times Essay Writing Competition on June 15, 2019 in the Manila Savoy Hotel.
Andrea Dominique Uriarte from HUMSS-1 was declared Champion in the Expository Category with her article focusing on the lack of accessible quality education in the country, while Priscila Torres, also from HUMSS-1, was second runner-up in the Narrative Category with a story about a corrupt politician who ends up turning into a whistleblower.
Seven students from the Senior High School were chosen to participate in the said event with each one choosing his/her own category. Two emerged as winners in specific categories and announced via email on June 10, 2019.
“Sobrang nakaka-boost ng confidence kasi there were a lot of entries, and I got lucky enough to be chosen as one of the awardees. Nakaka-flatter din kasi 'yung mga nag-judge ng essays, talagang very experienced journalists. It was very overwhelming, especially at first, at kahit hanggang ngayon, medyo surreal pa rin nung feeling,” Uriarte commented after garnering the champion rank.
The Manila Times Essay Writing Competition was organized by The Manila Times. The contest aimed to explore the creativity of the Filipino youth in terms of their artistry and expertise in writing. This year’s theme was about the recently held senatorial elections, with the topics diversified into categories, such as Descriptive, Expository, Narrative, and Persuasive.
