“Where are you?” These words are words of hope–few, yet impactful, a quote from the Mass presider, Rev. Fr. Carlo Magno Marcelo, on the 8th of December. Before the Mass, the marker of the Pilar Nenuca Almira Center for the Arts was unveiled and the statues for the benefactors of the Grace in Expectation Scholarship were also blessed by Fr. Marcelo.

“Bless more than curse,” Fr. Marcelo emphasized during the Mass of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. He explained the theme of the Jubilee year, Hope, which should serve as a guide through difficult times.  “Where are you?” are words of hope, which mean you are seen. He reminded everyone that rather than curse, we should bless more and walk with everyone.

After the Mass, the opening of the Pilar Nenuca Almira Center of the Arts started with the SPU Manila Chorale leading the singing of Lupang Hinirang. This was followed by Sr. Ma. Evangeline Anastacio, SPC’s Opening Remarks. She began by quoting a line by Paulo Coelho in The Alchemist: “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”  Sister gave a brief background of the building of the Center. She mentioned Arch. Corazon Cruz, who volunteered to be the architect of the Center. She also spoke of Ms. Chiqui Escareal-Go, who spearheaded the Grace in Expectation Scholarship, and sculptor, Ms. Julie Liuch.

The audience applauded as the following performances showcased different types of art: Tanghalang St. Paul portraying Justice and Truth in dramatic excerpts, the Paulinian Dance Troupe displaying rhythm in a Filipino folk dance, and the SPU Manila Chorale singing “Kalesa.”

After the performances, the Plaque of Appreciation was presented by Sr. Ma. Evangeline Anastacio, SPC, on behalf of Sr. Emilie Louise Del Castillo, SPC, Chairman of the SPUM Board of Trustees. Atty. Almira gave her message of thanks, in regard to St. Paul University Manila being more than a home, how St. Paul University Manila continues to love her and remind her of the care of SPC Sisters, who guided her and grounded and anchored her life. “Theater becomes a cradle,” she added as a final testament.

Grace in Expectation: Honors Mary and the Light within her, Ms. Chiqui Escareal-Go explained. In the Closing Remarks, Sr. Ma. Vicenta Estrella, SPC, quoted “A milestone in continuous something.” The curtains closed at 5:00 PM in preparation for The Resounding Joy: A Christmas Jubilee Concert.
