CARITAS CHRISTI URGET NOS IN ACTIONDate: November 23, 2020Posted by: Marionette Martinez
St. Paul University Philippines in Tuguegarao was submerged by Typhoon Ulysses when it slammed into the Cagayan Valley last week.
Paulinians here and abroad rallied to the cause of helping the university.
SPU USA Chair, Marilyn Abalos, sent out the following appeal:
ST. PAUL ALUMNAE TYPHOON ULYSSES APPEAL
FOR ST. PAUL UNIV. & ST. PAUL HOSPITAL & PEOPLE OF TUGUEGARAO
"Typhon Ulysses hit Central Luzon with devastating damage. Tuguegarao and St. Paul University Philippines were hit badly. This was the fifth super typhoon to hit the Philippines in three weeks! St. Paul is giving assistance to the evacuees in the cathedral gym through Fr. Bernie, Fr. Ever and Fr. Edgar of Saint Peter Metropolitan Cathedral. Please help St. Paul and the people of Tuguegarao.
“Fellow Paulinians, it's our time to give back to our alma mater and co-alumni. We need to help. When we help, we not only help others but ourselves too, by taking the opportunity to serve God. Helping our neighbors is a great way of serving the Lord.”-Angelo Maristela, Alumnus, St. Paul University Tuguegarao
St. Paul Alumnae USA has launched a Typhoon Ulysses Appeal soliciting support from Paulinians based in the United States to provide assistance to St. Paul University Philippines and St. Paul Hospital Tuguegarao. According to Sister Adelina Javellana, Administrator of St. Paul Hospital Tuguegarao and Provincial Assistant for Health Care, St. Paul University Philippines was completely flooded and the Sisters were not able to leave the campus immediately after Typhoon Ulysses passed through the region.
Sr. Adelina cited that many hospital staff were typhoon victims and could not report for duty while those who worked during the floods were not able to return to their families because they were covering the shifts of those staff who could not report to work. Many patients were not able to be discharged either, resulting in heavy shifts for hospital workers. While flood waters were ankle to knee deep around the hospital and nearby homes, other surrounding homes were waist to chest level high.

Monavic Duque-De Ubago, a Paulinian, (sister-in-law of Margot Ripoll) gathered relief goods for the people in remote areas of the province.
Photo shows her with rescuers preparing to load foodstuff, water, and other relief goods on the chopper.
The Paulinian spirit is truly alive and well.
