The Research Ethics Committee was established in November 2019 to ensure all researches made whether internally or externally follow the ethical standards and scientific merit recognized globally. Specifically, it safeguards the rights of the participants / respondents, the society and the researchers.

What are the requirements in submitting a study protocol for ethics clearance?
- Requirements for submitting a study protocol include a completely filled out study protocol registration form (Form F-1), consent form (Form F-1b), and the researcher’s curriculum vitae (CV).

What constitutes a ‘completely’ filled out form?
- A completely filled out form must contain the necessary signatures from the researcher, adviser and department heads; all necessary checkboxes in the form are ticked; and no parts of the form are left blank.

How long does it take to review a study protocol?
- It depends. There are study protocols that don’t include vulnerable participants which can be nominated for expedited review takes around one week turnover. However, if the study protocol includes minors, indigenous peoples, and etc. it may be nominated for a full review, which could take quite a bit more time.

Where can we send our Form F-1, Form F-1b and CV?
- Once forms are complete (including all signatures), you may send it to spumrec@spumanila.edu.ph. Kindly put on the subject line your ‘[Full Name] - Request for Ethics Review’.

Who reviews my study protocol registration form?
- Study protocols are reviewed by field experts with a thorough knowledge on ethical standards on conducting research.

What is the assent form?
- Assent forms are similar to consent forms in that it gives minor participants (ages below 18) the information on the research’s purpose, objective and what it is required from them in a manner that is easily understood.

Form F-1b: Consent Form
This form is to be given to and signed by your intended study participants / respondents to inform them of the purpose and objective of the study as well as its potential risks and benefits. Include a sample of the consent form that you will give to your participants when emailing the REC for ethics review registration.

Form F-1c: Assent Form
*This form is to be given and signed by your intended study participants / respondents who are minors to inform them of the purpose and objective of the study. Include a sample of the assent form when emailing the REC for ethics review registration if there are minors (participants aged below 18) involved in your study / research.
* Note: This form is to be given to the minors while a corresponding consent form should be given to the parent / guardian of the minor.
